The Masters, 2020 Remix
Early in the Pandemic, I decided to reimagine some of my favorite master paintings in today’s world. Check it out below!
Reimagining Renoir! I thought it would be interesting to pull some of the classics into the modern day. Here in NYC, restaurants have opened their outdoor spaces and it looks a lot different than it would have back in Renoir’s day. Who needs centerpieces when you have bottles of hand sanitizer? Welcome to 2020.
Sorry, Seurat, you’re up! 2020 Prospect Park Brooklyn looks a little different than his La Grande Jatte. Long red signs telling people to stay six feet apart dot the park and surgical masks litter the ground. But there are good things too; diversity for one!
I’m gaining way more appreciation for these masters as I try to tackle the smallest sections of them using digital tools. It took him 2 years to complete the full piece. Ooof!!! Pointillism, man.
Finally, I’m reimagining Hopper’s Nighthawks. Ok guys, let’s teleport to the diner...
Welcome to the lower east side of Manhattan in the summer of 2020! It’s a little on the early side because city-wide curfews are in effect. Sorry, nighthawks, if you are not out protesting then you are inside.
If you wanted to grab a bite, you’d be out of luck; like many small local businesses, the diner had to close its’ doors for good. The avenues are full of windows like this; half covered in newspapers, good bye signs, and supportive messages surrounding the pandemic and protests.
It’s a bummer of a depiction, but I still think there is hope. Eventually, with time, someone new will start their own dream of owning a diner here, and the story will start over. It will take time, but it will come. ❤️
